We freed the squirrel’s paw from a crack in a tree, but when we saw what it had retrieved, we immediately took both the squirrel and the find to the police.
My husband and I were walking in the city park on that sunny day when a strange noise near an old oak caught our attention. A squirrel’s tail was twitching on the trunk. As we got closer, we saw that the squirrel had stuck its paw into a crack in the tree and couldn’t pull it out. It thrashed and scratched, but to no avail.

At first, we thought it was just an accident. My husband carefully helped the little creature, freeing its paw. You would think the squirrel would now scurry up the branches.
But instead, it put its paw back into the same crevice! And got stuck again. We helped it once more. And again… The squirrel seemed obsessed with whatever was hidden inside.
Finally, after another desperate attempt, it pulled its paw out—but not alone. A strange object gleamed in the squirrel’s claws.
At first, we thought it was a nut: small, round, with a grayish coating… But upon closer inspection, I froze: it was not a nut at all, but a stone. Heavy, with a deep inner gleam, it looked frighteningly valuable.

Seeing this, we immediately grabbed both the find and the squirrel and went straight to the police from the park. Otherwise, no one would have believed such an incredible story.
At the station, the officers listened to us in amazement. One of them exchanged a glance with his partner and said, “A jewelry store was robbed last night. A batch of precious stones is missing.”
The police immediately went to that very spot in the park. When they pried open the crack in the old oak, they found a whole scattering of stones wrapped in rags. It turned out that the thieves, fleeing from pursuit, had hidden their loot in the tree, planning to return later.

But their plan was foiled by a small park resident—the squirrel, who, guided by instinct, decided to retrieve the “nut.” And so, it became an unwitting hero, helping to solve the crime.
